Spring 2010 Course Enrollment Information

Oct 23, 2009

CLASS ENROLMENT FOR SPRING 2010

ADVICE TO PSYCH MAJORS

(Please read this entire memo before doing your enrolment)

There are 3 phases to the enrolment process:

Pre-Enrolment Phase for Spring 2010 (Oct 26-Nov 1, 2009)

You may submit course requests for Spring 2010 any-time on Quest Oct 26 through Nov 1. However, I strongly recommend that you do your pre-enrolment as early as possible that week.

At this stage you cannot customize your schedule as much as you are used to doing during the “enrolment appointment” phase. For example, during the 'pre-enrolment' phase you can't choose between section numbers for lectures, tutorials, labs, etc.   You will however, be able to indicate degree of flexibility with respect to the location of the course, daytime versus evening time slots, and mode of delivery (e.g., between a Univ versus St. Jeromes section, between the on-campus and distance education section, whether on-campus courses can be daytime and/or evening, etc).  Enrolment is subject to the usual checks such as pre-requisites.

It is very important that you list course choices in priority order!

Please record priority order for all of the courses that you are adding yourself beginning with the number 1. The system will not let you make all of your courses priority order 1.

Priority order 1 is not equal to zero (zero is for courses that have been recorded for you only - if applicable). If you change the priority order of any of your courses from zero to any other number and you later change your mind about what you did, I can't change the priority back to zero for you. The zeros are generated by the computer during the 'block enrolment' process only which takes place in advance of any 'pre-enrolment' activity. Sorry.

You can logon to Quest as many times as you want during the “pre-enrolment” window to make changes.

Those who miss “pre-enrolment” WILL NOT have another opportunity to drop/add courses for Spring 2010 until the “enrolment appointment” phase in Feb.

See additional notes below regarding the 'pre-enrolment' phase.

Enrolment Appointment Phase for Spring 2010 (Feb 8-13, 2010)

Please do not miss your 'enrolment appointment'! Fourth year students will be assigned appointments before third year and so on.

By this stage, the Schedule of Classes for Spring 2010 will be finalized and you will be able to view class times, instructor names, etc.

For those who submitted 'pre-enrolment' requests, this will be your first opportunity to view the results of those requests on Quest and to 'top up' the schedule and/or customize the schedule (e.g., switch sections for lectures, labs, tutorials, etc; drop/add courses; etc.).

For those who did not submit 'pre-enrolment' requests, this will be your first opportunity to build a schedule for the Spring term.

For those who owe fees to the University, if you preenrolled for courses, those course requests were cancelled. You will not be able to enrol in courses until your account has been cleared.

Enrolment at this stage is subject to pre-requisite checks, reserve caps, limits, space availability, etc. per usual.

Open Enrolment Phase for Spring 2009 (begins Feb. 15, 2010)

Opportunity for all students to do further customization of their schedules for the Spring term.

Enrolment at this stage is subject to pre-requisite checks, reserve caps, limits, space availability, etc. per usual.

Additional Notes Regarding the 'Pre-Enrolment' Phase

CAUTION REGARDING EXPECTATIONS

When you 'submit' your 'pre-enrolment' requests on Quest, note that 'Success' does not mean that you are successfully enrolled in the course.  'Success' means that your 'pre-enrolment' requests have been recorded.   Keep in mind that 'pre-enrolment' puts you in the ‘hopper’ for a course; it is not a guarantee of a place in a course, or that the course will be able to accommodate everyone who requests it. Decisions about class size, course times, number of sections, reserve caps, and so on are made at the departmental level over the next few months based on data collected from students at the 'pre-enrolment' phase as well as on departmental resources.  This should not discourage you from submitting your courses at the 'pre-enrolment phase' because those who do not participate in the 'pre-enrolment' phase will certainly disadvantage themselves with respect to course enrolment.

Prior to the 'Enrolment Appointment Phase', if you 'View My Schedule' on Quest, note that the 'Status = Enrolled' is actually only confirmation that you have made a 'Pre-Enrolment Request'. This is confirmed by the fact that the section numbers for the course requests begin with the number 7'. Sorry for the additional misleading information but these are screen shots that the university has no control over.

ADVICE REGARDING TIMING OF DATA ENTRY IN QUEST

The 'pre-enrolment' system will be looking at the year/level of students as was the case during 'enrolment appointments'.  However, the date/time at which students submit their courses for 'pre-enrolment' is not supposed to be a factor in determining whether or not you are enrolled in a particular course.  Thus students should not feel rushed during the 'pre-enrolment' window to submit their course requests.  However, my advice is that you try to enrol in courses as early as possible during the 'enrolment appointment' window.  It might not make any difference to the enrolment outcomes but it won’t hurt.

------

'PRE-ENROLMENT COURSE OVERRIDE FORM'

Anyone who wants to take a course without the appropriate background (pre-requisite or co-requisite) will be required to submit one of these forms (not the usual Course Override Form!) for approval.

----

COURSE LOAD RESTRICTIONS FOR THE FACULTY OF ARTS (2.75 units)

The normal course load for students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts is a maximum of 2.75 units. If your overall average is at least 75% currently and you need to take 3.0-3.25 units in a given term (e.g., 6 courses plus one Science lab), see FAQ 36 for further details.

----

WITHHOLD OF MARKS - SERVICE INDICATORS

For those who owe fees to the university and have a 'service indicator' on their record, you will be allowed to 'pre-enrol' fo Spring 2010 courses (Oct 26-Nov 1). However, if the fees have not been paid before courses for the Spring term are officially scheduled (mid Jan), your 'pre-enrolment' for the Spring term will be cancelled.

VIEWING THE FUTURE TERM COURSE OFFERINGS LIST ON QUEST

For 'pre-enrolment', it is very important that you view ' Future Term Course Offerings List for Undergraduate Students'' on Quest because the information there is more up to date than the Schedule of Classes.  The link is provided here but also appears on the right sidebar on Quest.   Also, that special course offerings list contains notes that will not appear on the regular Schedule of Classes that might influence your course selections and/or the priority order of the course selections, for example:

  • if enrolment is restricted to particular target groups (e.g., that you might or might not belong to) or special permission is required to enrol

Departments can choose not to make certain courses available for enrolment at the 'Pre-Ernolment' phase (e.g., courses that require 'departmental consent' might not be listed). See Comments Regarding Psych Courses for Spring 2010 below for information regarding the Psychology courses that are not listed for 'pre-enrolment'.

COMMENTS REGARDING PSYCH COURSES FOR SPRING 2010

Spaces will be reserved in Psychology courses for Psych Majors per usual.

Click here for the Psychology Course Offerings including the proposed course times. This website is more up-to-date than the Schedule of Classes for Spring 2010. The Schedule of Classes currently cannot be trusted (e.g., Psych 212, 230, 320, 392, 453 are not offered Spring 2010).

Click here for an important announcement regarding the 'Advanced Psychology' course requirements.

Natural Science Research Methods Courses for Spring 2010 (Psych 394 and 398):

  • You may NOT take more than one of the these courses because they are antirequisites to each other. If you want to take a second Natural Science Research Methods course, take Psych 483. Details are provided below.

  • You may NOT enrol in more than one of Psych 394 and 398 as a method of 'shopping' for courses.   That tactic is unfair to other students because it artificially inflates enrolment numbers, shuts out legitimate requests, and causes waiting lists unnecessarily.

  • Psych 398R and Psych 399R (Directed Studies courses for students in the Social Development Studies Majors) are not the same courses as Psych 398 (Research in Memory) and Psych 399 (Research in Industrial/Organizational Psychology).

Click here for the description for Psych 455 (Honours Seminar: Human Aggression) for Spring 2010.

Priority enrolment for Psych 394, 398, 455 Spring 2010 will be given to those in the Coop stream of study. Click here for details. If anyone in the Regular stream of study wants to take those courses, preenrol for them and contact me ASAP (by Nov 1 please) to get on the waiting list.

Courses requiring course applications ('pre-enrolment' not permitted):

For enrolment in Psych 499A/B/C, click here for details. For example, those enrolling for Psych 499A must submit the course application form. Further, those enrolling in Psych 499C will require 'overrides' for enrolment.

------

LEVEL 2B (SPRING 2010) HONOURS PSYCH AND ARTS AND BUSINESS COOP STUDENTS

You will be taking Psych 292 (Basic Data Analysis) Winter 2011 not Spring 2010. This course is never offered in the Spring term. See the degree requirement check list for your program (link below), which includes course sequence information, for further details.
