Fall 2011 Course Enrollment Information

June 6, 2011

ENROLMENT FOR FALL 2011

ADVICE TO PSYCH MAJORS
(AND APPLICANTS TO THE PSYCH MAJOR)
FROM THE PSYCH UG ADVISOR

THERE ARE 3 THREE PHASES TO THE ENROLMENT PROCESS

Stage 1:
Pre-Enrolment Phase for Fall 2011 (Feb 28-March 6, 2011)

If you are applying for the Psychology Major, click here for application/admission information.

You may submit pre-enrolment requests for Fall 2011 courses on Quest anytime Feb 28 through March 6. You can logon to Quest as many times as you want during the “pre-enrolment” window to make changes to the courses requested and/or the priority order of the requests.

Although the date/time at which you submit courses for 'pre-enrolment' is not supposed to be a factor in determining whether or not you are enrolled in a particular course, I strongly recommend that you do your pre-enrolment as early as possible. No guarantees but that plan might increase your chances of admission to limited/restricted enrolment courses.

At the pre-enrolment stage you cannot customize your schedule as much as you are used to doing during the “enrolment appointment” phase. See additional notes below regarding the 'pre-enrolment' phase.

Those who miss “pre-enrolment” WILL NOT have another opportunity to drop/add courses for Fall 2011 until the “enrolment appointment” phase in June.

Stage 2a:
Enrolment Appointment Phase for Fall 2011 for Current UW students (June 6-11, 2011)

Please do not miss your 'enrolment appointment! Fourth year students will be assigned appointments before third year and so on.

By this stage, the Schedule of Classes for Fall 2011 will be finalized and you will be able to view class times, instructor names, etc.

For those who submitted 'pre-enrolment' requests, this will be your first opportunity to view the results of those requests on Quest and to 'top up' the schedule and/or customize the schedule (e.g., switch sections for lectures, labs, tutorials, etc; drop/add courses; etc.).

For those who did not submit 'pre-enrolment' requests, this will be your first opportunity to build a schedule for the Fall term.

For those who owe fees to the University, if you preenrolled for courses, those course requests were cancelled. You will not be able to enrol in courses until your account has been cleared.

Enrolment at the enrolment appointment stage is subject to pre-requisite checks, reserve caps, enrolment limits, space availability, etc. per usual.

If the total enrolment in a course equals the enrolment limit for the course, you won't be able to self-enrol in the course because it is full. Further, if available openings in a course are only available for a target group that you don't belong to (check the enrolments and limits on the reserve caps), you'll get a message from Quest that the course is full and your enrolment request will be unsuccessful. In either case, check Quest frequently during your enrolment appointment (and during open enrolment if necessary) for an opening because others are dropping and adding courses also. For waiting list information for courses, contact the Department/Academic Unit offering the course (for Psych courses click here). Not all Departments/Academic Units conduct waiting lists.

If Quest indicates that 'dept permission is required' to enrol in a course, you can't self-enrol on Quest even if there appears to be an opening in the course because e.g., current openings are being saved for those on waiting lists or a special course application form is required to enrol in the course. Contact the Department/Academic Unit offering the course for details (for Psych courses click here).

When dropping/adding courses, suggest that you use the 'course swap' feature on Quest to do this instead of the course drop/add feature (this is a more accurate test of space availability than checking the Schedule of Classes). 'Swap' is a conditional statement telling Quest not to drop X course unless Y course is added successfully.

Stage 2b:
Enrolment Appointment Phase for Fall 2011 for First Time Users of Quest (July 11-24, 2011)

See details as Stage 2a above for Current UW students.

Stage 3:
Open Enrolment Phase for Fall 2011 (begins July 25, 2011)

'Open enrolment' is your opportunity to do further customization to your Fall schedule.

Open enrolment for on-campus courses for Fall 2011 is July 25-Sept 23, 2011.

Open enrolment for online/distance education courses for Fall 2011 is July 25-Sept 16, 2011.

Enrolment at this stage is subject to pre-requisite checks, reserve caps, enrolment limits, space availability, etc.

In either case, check Quest frequently for an opening because others are dropping and adding courses also.

WHAT IS OFFERED FALL 2011

PRE-ENROLMENT WINDOW

For 'pre-enrolment', it is very important that you view ' Future Term Course Offerings List for Undergraduate Students'' on Quest because the course offering information there is more up to date for Fall 2011 than on the Schedule of Classes.  The link is provided here but also appears on the right sidebar on Quest.   Also, that special course offerings list contains notes that will not appear on the regular Schedule of Classes that might influence your course selections and/or the priority order of the course selections, for example:

  • if enrolment is restricted to particular target groups (e.g., that you might or might not belong to) or special permission is required to enrol.

Departments can choose not to make certain courses available for enrolment at the 'Pre-Ernolment' phase (e.g., courses that require 'departmental consent' might not be listed).

ENROLMENT APPOINTMENT WINDOW AND OPEN ENROLMENT

Refer to the course offering and enrolment information on Quest.

Or click here for the alternate version of the Schedule of Classes (not as up-to-date as Quest and not available during the preenrolment window).

PSYCH COURSES

Further details regarding Psychology course offerings for Fall 2011 through Spring 2012 are provided below.

SUBMITTING COURSES FOR PRE-ENROLMENT

At the pre-enrolment stage you cannot customize your schedule as much as you are used to doing during the “enrolment appointment” phase. For example, during the 'pre-enrolment' phase you can't choose between section numbers for lectures, tutorials, labs, etc.  You will however, be able to indicate degree of flexibility with respect to the location of the course, daytime versus evening time slots, and mode of delivery (e.g., between a Univ versus St. Jeromes section, between the on-campus and online/distance education section, whether on-campus courses can be daytime and/or evening, etc).  Enrolment is subject to the usual checks such as pre-requisites.

It is very important that you list course choices in priority order!

Please record priority order for all of the courses that you are adding yourself beginning with the number 1. The system will not let you make all of your courses priority order 1.

Priority order 1 is not equal to zero (zero is for courses that have been recorded for you only - if applicable). If you change the priority order of any of your courses from zero to any other number and you later change your mind about what you did, I can't change the priority back to zero for you. The zeros are generated by the computer during the 'block enrolment' process only which takes place in advance of any 'pre-enrolment' activity. Sorry.

Click here for the pre-enrolment instructions provided on Quest.

PRE-ENROLMENT COURSE OVERRIDE FORM

Anyone who wants to take a course without the appropriate background (pre-requisite or co-requisite) will be required to submit the Pre-Enrolment Course Override Form (not the usual Course Override Form!) for approval.

Note that for the Enrolment Appointment Window and the Open Enrolment Window that the regular "Course Override Form" is used.

WITHHOLD OF MARKS - SERVICE INDICATORS

For those who owe fees to the university and have a 'service indicator' on their record, you will be allowed to 'pre-enrol' for courses. However, if the fees have not been paid before courses are officially scheduled (shortly before the enrolment appointment window), your 'pre-enrolment' for courses will be cancelled.

CAUTION REGARDING EXPECTATIONS FOR ENROLMENT AT THE
PRE-ENROLMENT WINDOW

When you 'submit' your 'pre-enrolment' requests on Quest, note that 'Success' does not mean that you are successfully enrolled in the course.  'Success' means that your 'pre-enrolment' requests have been recorded.   Keep in mind that 'pre-enrolment' puts you in the ‘hopper’ for a course; it is not a guarantee of a place in a course, or that the course will be able to accommodate everyone who requests it. Decisions about class size, course times, number of sections, reserve caps, and so on are made at the departmental level over the next few months based on data collected from students at the 'pre-enrolment' phase as well as on departmental resources.  This should not discourage you from submitting your courses at the 'pre-enrolment phase' because those who do not participate in the 'pre-enrolment' phase will certainly disadvantage themselves with respect to course enrolment.

Prior to the 'Enrolment Appointment Phase', if you 'View My Schedule' on Quest, note that the 'Status = Enrolled' is actually only confirmation that you have made a 'Pre-Enrolment Request'. This is confirmed by the fact that the section numbers for the course requests begin with the number 7'. Sorry for the additional misleading information but these are screen shots that the university has no control over.

Shortly before the enrolment appointment stage (in June for Fall 2011), the scheduling system will process the pre-enrolment requests. At that time, actual course enrolment will be subject to pre-requisite checks, reserve caps, enrolment limits, space availability, etc. per usual.

WAITING LIST REQUESTS FOR PSYCHOLOGY COURSES

Psych Majors who are unable to enrol in Psychology courses for Winter 2012 during their 'enrolment appointments' in October (Oct 10-15, 2011) should contact me at that time for assistance.

Waiting list instructions for Fall 2011 will be posted on the Psychology Undergraduate website by June 3, 2011.

COURSE LOAD RESTRICTIONS FOR THE FACULTY OF ARTS (2.75 units)

The normal course load for students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts is a maximum of 2.75 units. If your overall average is at least 75% currently and you need to take 3.0-3.25 units in a given term (e.g., 6 courses plus one Science lab), see FAQ 36 for further details.

CHECK YOUR DEGREE REQUIREMENTS EACH TERM - THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

Print the appropriate degree requirement check list and fill in the courses that:

  • you have successfully completed so far (in pen)
  • you are currently taking (in pencil) (if applicable)
  • you are planning to take next term (in pencil) (if applicable)

so that you can see what you have left to do and can plan when to take the remaining requirements. You should do this routinely each term because it is your responsibility to ascertain that all requirements for graduation have been met.

If you are trying to decide between 2 Psychology academic plans, fill out both check lists so you can make comparisons and revisions to your course plan as necessary. If you are hoping to switch from General Psych to Honours Psych, see FAQ 23 for further details.

Please direct questions regarding degree requirements for other academic plans to the appropriate academic advisor.
