Enrolment

How do I enrol in an HRM plan?

See 'Prospective Students' for details. Current UW students must submit a Plan Modification Form and an HRM Application Form. New or Transfer Students to UW must first apply to the University of Waterloo.

When do I enrol in an HRM plan?

Current UW students can submit application forms anytime after completing HRM 200. It is to your advantage to enrol as soon as you've completed HRM 200 so you can take advantage of reserved seats for HRM students in the HRM required courses. Note that you must be in an HRM plan to enrol in AFM 123 and HRM 301.

Which HRM plan should I enrol in?

See 'Academic Plans' for details. The HRM plan you enrol in is dictated by your other academic plan. For example, students in Honours Psychology enrol in the HRM Specialization for Honours Psych Majors. Students in Four Year General Psychology can enrol in either the HRM Minor or the HRM Option. Students in Three Year General Psychology can enrol in the HRM Option.

We have no feedback from employers suggesting they prefer one plan over another. The various plans were created so the HRM plans would be available to a wider audience of students.

Courses

What HRM courses are being offered in the coming year?

See 'Courses' for details. The most current information regarding HRM course offerings (HRM courses and courses for the HRM plans offered by other departments) is on the Course Offerings page.

What is involved in Psych 467 - Human Resources Apprenticeship?

Psych 467 (heldwith Psych 465) is offered Winter only and is open to Honours Psychology students only. The course provides students with an opportunity for an unpaid apprenticeship in a human resources setting in the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

The apprenticeship component normally requires a commitment of 6 hours per week for 10 weeks. Students are placed in settings that allow them to gain experience in an area relevant to their career goals as well as to contribute to the work being done in these settings.

In addition to the apprenticeship hours, students also meet weekly for the seminar component with the Course Coordinator to discuss issues that arise from apprenticeship experiences and to talk about career issues. Students share information on work within the various sectors in which they are placed in individual and group presentations.

Psych 467 counts as an elective course in the HRM Specialization for Honours Psychology Majors. See the course application form on the Psych UG website for further details including the application deadline, prerequisites for enrolment, examples of previous apprenticeship settings, etc.

How do I get on a wait list for an HRM course?

See 'Courses - Wait List Information/Instructions' for details.

CHRP Designation

Where can I find out more about the CHRP designation?

See 'Resources - Professional Development' for details. The CHRP designation is a voluntary designation offered by HRPA which signifies that an HR professional has met a prescribed level of academic and experiential knowledge. The CHRP places the practitioner at the leading edge of the HR professional in Canada.

We also hold an Information Session each Fall and Winter term where we invite an HRPA representative to provide details about the HRPA and the CHRP designation. Watch 'Events' for upcoming sessions.

Which CHRP approved course are offered at Waterloo?

All nine courses currently required for the CHRP designation are offered at Waterloo:

See Course Equivalences on the 'Academic Plan' page for further information regarding the nine required courses and the approved Waterloo equivalents.

How do I enrol in required CHRP required courses at other institutions (e.g., Wilfrid Laurier)?

Courses required for the CHRP designation are also available at a number of institutions across the province - there's a search engine on the HRPA website which allows you to search by course or by institution for approved courses - including Wilfrid Laurier: BUS 414, 448, 464 (Compensation, Health and Safety, and Labour Relations).

Current UW students enrolled in a degree program may enrol in on-campus BUS courses at Laurier (including the BUS 111 prerequisite) on Quest. If you need assistance please contact Peter Brillinger, the UW designate for the WLU SBE courses. See the information under Notes on the 'Academic Plan' page for further information.

Post- and non-degree students are normally not eligible to enrol in BUS courses and should contact the Registrar's Office before proceeding.
