Psychology Department Course Requirements
PhD students in Cognitive Neuroscience are required to complete a total of 12 half (0.5-credit) courses. These consist of two research and design courses (PSYCH 632 plus one other, for example PSYCH 800), six CORE Cognitive Neuroscience courses, and four BREADTH courses outside the area of interest/specialization.
In addition, studnets must attend the Cognitive Neuroscience Seminar series which runs through the Fall and Winter terms. This seminar does not count toward the 12 half coursses required for a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience. Students are assigned a different number for each of the four years they are registered in the course, i.e, first year students enroll in Psych 707A. All students and faculty in Cognitive Neuroscience attend the Cognitive Neuroscience Research Seminar. This is meant as a forum for presentation of student research. For the current schedule of the seminar, visit: http://psychology.uwaterloo.ca/gradprog/programs/phd/cogneuro/cn_seminar.html.
The following two CORE courses are considered to be required of all stduents:
- Fundamentals of Behavioural Neuroscience (PSYCH 677A)
- Human Neuroanatomy and Neuropathology (PSYCH 784)
A typical program of study for the first year of study would include taking the two statistics/design courses and two Cognitive Neuroscience CORE courses. Here are some the CN courses which have been offered in the past few years:
- Cognitive Neuropsychology I (Psych 779A)
- Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory (Psych 781)
- Visual Perception (Psych 787)
- Epidemiologic Methods in Aging Research (Psych 788)
- Mind-wandering and inattention (Psych 789)
- Case Studies in Neuropsychology (Psych 790)
- An Introduction to Methods in Computational Neuroscience (Psych 792)
- Electrophysiology Methodologies in Brain Research (Psych 793)
