University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarship

The University of Waterloo Graduate Scholarships are disbursed by Departments normally to full-time graduate students with first-class (80%) standing. The awards may be given as UW graduate Entrance scholarships, paid over three terms; as UW Merit Scholarships, paid over three terms; or as one term awards. All students are automatically considered for these awards during their MA and Ph.D years.

University of Waterloo International Graduate Student Awards

New international students starting a master's degree program will receive an International Master's Student Award valued at $4,650 each year ($1,550 per term), for a maximum of 6 terms.
New international students starting a doctoral degree program will receive an International Doctoral Student Award valued at $9,300 each year ($3,100 per term), for a maximum of 9 terms.
Eligible students will be enrolled full-time in graduate degree programs (non full-cost recovery) at the University of Waterloo, hold a valid Canadian Study Permit, meet the academic progress requirements of their program, and not hold external awards or sponsorships. All students are automatically considered for these awards during their MA and Ph.D years.

Ontario Graduate Scholarships (OGS)

These are awarded by the Ontario government to outstanding applicants. Forms are available online, with the deadline normally in early October. All Canadian citizens, permanent residents and visitors already holding student authorization are eligible for these awards, which have a value of $15,000.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Scholarships (NSERC)

These are awarded by NSERC to students on the basis of high scholastic achievement and evidence of capacity to do research. Students whose interests are in behavioural neuroscience or cognition/perception and whose average is 80% or better during the previous two years of study should consider applying for an NSERC Scholarship. Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible. An NSERC Scholarship can be held at any Canadian university and, in special circumstances, can also be held at universities outside Canada. The deadline is late September, and the application is available online usually at the end of August. The value of these awards begin at $17,300.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Fellowships

SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships programs aim to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly-qualified academic personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities.
CGS Doctoral Scholarships are valued at $35,000 per annum for 36 months. Subject to satisfactory progress and certain conditions detailed below, they are tenable for the first to third years or the second to fourth years of doctoral study.
SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships are valued at $20,000 per annum for up to 48 months. SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships are tenable at any recognized university in Canada or abroad provided that the award holder has completed at least one previous degree at a Canadian university. For award holders who do not meet this requirement, the fellowships are tenable only at recognized Canadian postsecondary institutions. Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible. The applications are available online and the deadline is early October.

Canada Graduate Scholarships Program - Master's Scholarships

The CGS Master's program seeks to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly-qualified personnel by supporting students in the social sciences and humanities who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.
The CGS Master's program offers non-renewable twelve-month awards, valued at $17,500, and tenable at recognized Canadian universities, to students who intend to pursue full-time studies at the master's level in a discipline supported by SSHRC. Awards must be taken up in May or September or in January. Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents are eligible. You must have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. The applications are available online and the deadline is early October.

University of Waterloo President's Graduate Scholarships
(for Recipients of Tri-Council Scholarships and OGS)

Beginning May 2003, the Vice President, Academic and Provost and Dean's Council established an incentive award valued at up to $10,000/year for recipients of Tri-Council Scholarships.

Eligibility
All new award recipients in 2005-2006 or on-going 2004-2005 Tri-Council Scholarship recipients (except CGSD) who hold the following awards are eligible:

SSHRC
CIHR Master's or Doctoral Research Award
OGS

No application is required.

Value and Tenure of Award
The President's Scholarship valued at up to $10,000/year (in addition to the Tri-Council Scholarship or OGS).
